Deep Meaning · English

In this pivotal verse, Lord Krishna transcends the classification of beings into the 'perishable' (ksara) and the 'imperishable' (aksara) to unveil the Uttama Purusha, or Purushottama—the Supreme Person. While the perishable refers to the myriad forms of the material creation and the imperishable refers to the individual soul (Jiva) or the cosmic essence, the Purushottama is the transcendental substratum that sustains both. He is not merely a distant deity but the inner Controller (Ishvara) who permeates the three worlds—physical, subtle, and causal—maintaining their existence through His own unmanifested presence. This distinction is crucial because it reveals that the Divine is not subject to the dualities of matter or the limitations of the individual spirit; rather, He is the source from which the entire cosmic drama emanates and the support by which it persists without ever being diminished or altered. The use of the term 'Avyaya' (indestructible) underscores that while the worlds may fluctuate, the Supreme Person remains the unchanging reality, the silent witness and the active sustainer of all manifestations. For the seeker, this verse serves as a bridge between the impersonal Brahman and the personal Godhead, inviting us to recognize that the ultimate reality is not an abstraction but a living, sustaining Presence that encompasses both transcendence and immanence.

The Purushottama is the transcendent, unchanging reality that sustains the entire cosmos from within while remaining beyond the dualities of matter and individual consciousness.
