Deep Meaning · English

In this pivotal verse, Lord Krishna unveils the mysterious paradox of the Divine relationship with creation, often described in Advaita Vedanta as Vivartavada—the doctrine of apparent manifestation. By declaring that the entire universe is pervaded by His unmanifest form (Avyakta-murti), Krishna establishes that the substratum of existence is not a distant Creator, but the very consciousness that allows reality to appear. He is the canvas upon which the cosmic play unfolds, yet He remains untouched by the qualities of the projection, much like the sky remains unaffected by the passing clouds or the desert remains dry despite the appearance of a mirage. The second line introduces the profound theological tension of Panentheism: 'All beings dwell in Me, yet I do not dwell in them.' This signifies that while the finite resides within the Infinite, the Infinite is never contained or limited by the finite. Krishna is inviting Arjuna to look beyond the transient forms of the battlefield—the bodies, weapons, and identities—to recognize the Divine ground that sustains them. This realization is the 'King of Sciences' (Raja Vidya) because it liberates the seeker from the illusion of separation, turning every observation of the world into an act of communion with the Supreme.

The Divine is the all-pervading substratum of existence that sustains the universe without being bound, defined, or diminished by the forms it holds.
