Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Arjuna reaches a state of spiritual intoxication, acknowledging that the descriptions of the Divine are not merely information, but 'amritam'—the nectar of immortality. Arjuna calls Krishna 'Janardana,' the sustainer of the people, signaling that he recognizes Krishna not as a distant monarch, but as the intimate source of all existence. This request for more detail reflects the soul's natural hunger for the Infinite; once the mind experiences a taste of the Divine splendor, worldly delights lose their luster, and the thirst to hear more becomes an insatiable devotion. This exchange is a pivotal moment in the Gita where the intellectual inquiry of a student transforms into the rapturous surrender of a devotee. Arjuna is essentially admitting that Krishna’s glories are so vast that they defy conceptual boundaries. By asking for these 'vibhutis'—the specific manifestations of God in the world—Arjuna is learning to see the Divine signature upon every atom of creation. This is the transition from seeing an object to recognizing the Subject, where the listener becomes one with the message, experiencing the presence of the Transcendent even while listening to the vibration of the word.
The soul's inherent hunger for the Divine is infinite, transforming the act of listening into a nectarous experience that satisfies the heart while deepening the thirst for realization.
