He saw fathers-in-law and friends in both the armies. The son of Kunti, Arjuna, seeing all those kinsmen thus standing arrayed, spoke sorrowfully, deeply filled with pity.

Deep Meaning · English

Arjuna’s descent into despondency, as depicted in this verse, is not merely a momentary lapse of military courage; it is the fundamental human collision between familial ego-attachment and the unfolding of cosmic duty. By naming his opponents as 'relatives' (bandhūn), Arjuna manifests a clouded vision wherein his identity is anchored exclusively in social and biological roles. His 'great compassion' (kṛipayā parayā) acts as a beautiful but deceptive mask for the fear of loss, signaling a profound psychological entrapment where the individual soul confuses transient worldly relationships with the eternal nature of the Self. This moment of crisis serves as the essential existential vacuum that necessitates Krishna’s subsequent revelation, as one cannot fully grasp the non-dual truth of Atman until they have first witnessed the collapse of their limited, relational worldview. Thus, Arjuna represents every sincere seeker standing on the battlefield of life, paralyzed by the realization that their worldly identity must perish for the divine purpose to manifest. His sorrow is the painful tearing of the veil, marking the transition from a life governed by societal mandates to a life guided by the singular light of Truth.

True spiritual awakening often begins at the point of utter despair, where the breakdown of worldly attachments forces the soul to seek a higher, transcendent reality.
