The unwavering firmness, through which Yoga restrains the functions of the mind, life-force, and senses—that firmness, O Arjuna, is Sattvic (pure).
Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Bhagavan Krishna defines the nature of Sattvic Dhriti (determination) as the foundational pillar for the spiritual practitioner. It is not merely a mental resolve to accomplish worldly tasks, but a sacred integration where the mind, the life-force (prana), and the senses are brought into a single, focused alignment. Through the practice of Yoga—a state of inner union—the seeker learns to sustain this equilibrium so that their energies are not dissipated in the chaotic currents of desire or distraction. This type of determination is described as 'avyabhicharini,' meaning unswerving or loyal; it is a devotion to the path of self-realization that does not falter even when tested by the dualities of existence. From the Advaitic perspective, this determination acts as the vessel for grace. By restraining the erratic movements of the mind and the senses, the seeker transforms their life from a series of scattered reactions into a singular, purposeful movement toward the Divine. Krishna is teaching Arjuna that spiritual maturity requires more than intellectual clarity; it requires an active, steadfast hold upon one's own inner life. When the internal machinery of human existence—mind, senses, and breath—is anchored in the constancy of Yogic consciousness, the practitioner transcends the oscillating gunas and establishes themselves in the serenity of the Self.
True Sattvic determination is the unswerving commitment to anchor one's entire being—mind, breath, and senses—in the constant, steady awareness of the Divine through the practice of Yoga.
