Wherever Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, is; and wherever Arjuna, the wielder of the bow, is; there is prosperity, victory, happiness, and a firm policy; this is my conviction.

Whatever is sacrificed, given, or performed, and whatever austerity is practiced without faith, it is called 'Asat', O Arjuna; it is of no value here or hereafter (after death).

Deep Meaning · English

In this profound verse, Krishna concludes the discourse on the three types of faith by addressing the existential void left by actions performed without 'shraddha' (faith). Faith, in the context of the Gita, is not mere blind belief; it is the vital, heart-centered alignment of the soul with the Divine truth. When sacrifice, charity, or penance are performed mechanically, for egoic display, or devoid of a sanctified inner orientation, they become 'asat'—that which is ephemeral or false. They lack the ontological substance required to bridge the gap between the mundane and the transcendent. Krishna emphasizes that such deeds exist in a vacuum; they possess no 'currency' in the subtle realms of the afterlife, nor do they yield genuine peace or spiritual transformation in this life. It is a cautionary teaching for the seeker that the value of an action is determined not by the external performance, but by the interior quality of dedication. Without the anchor of faith, our deeds remain mere 'asat'—shadows that disappear as soon as the light of truth moves, leaving the practitioner exactly where they began. This reveals that the spiritual journey is ultimately an internal calibration; until the heart is fully invested in the sacred, the actions we perform remain unanchored in the eternal reality of the Self.

Faith is the essential alchemical catalyst that transmutes ordinary, perishable actions into eternal spiritual merit; without it, our deeds are hollow and bear no fruit in this world or the next.
