The yogis striving for perfection behold Him dwelling in the Self; but, the unrefined and unintelligent, even though striving, do not see Him.

Deep Meaning · English

In this profound verse, Krishna clarifies that the perception of the Divine is not a matter of intellectual exertion alone, but of spiritual refinement. The 'striving' (yatantah) of the yogi is directed toward the internal purification of the heart, allowing them to recognize the Lord already 'enshrined' within the Self (atmani avasthitam). It is a shift from seeking an external object to revealing an internal presence that has been obscured by the ego's projections. The spiritual realization is not the creation of something new, but the unveiling of what is eternally present yet veiled by ignorance. Conversely, the 'akritatmanah'—those who have not disciplined their inner faculties—remain blind to this indwelling divinity even when they exert effort. Their struggle is often directed toward worldly outcomes rather than self-purification. Krishna highlights the vital necessity of 'chetasaḥ' (conscious awareness/discrimination); without a mind that has been tempered by selfless action, detachment, and meditation, the divine reality remains invisible. The essence of this verse is that the Divine is not hiding from us; we are hiding from the Divine through the turbulence of an unrefined mind.

Spiritual realization is not an act of attainment through struggle, but a state of clarity achieved through the purification of the mind, which reveals the divinity already present within.
