Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Bhagavan Krishna outlines the rigorous technical methodology of Dhyana-yoga, describing the physical and energetic discipline required to withdraw consciousness from the external world. The 'gates' refer to the senses (indriyas), which continuously leak our vital life-force into the objective realm. By restraining these, the seeker moves from a state of sensory dissipation to one of inward concentration. Confining the mind in the heart—the spiritual center of the subjective 'I'—is a profound act of centering the ego away from the external objects of desire. Following this, the instruction to bring the prana to the 'mūrdhni' (the crown or the point between the eyebrows) signifies the ascent of consciousness from the mundane survival instincts to the higher, transcendental centers of awareness. This is the physiological expression of a psychological total surrender. Krishna is guiding Arjuna toward a state where the practitioner is no longer a slave to reactive habits but is established in a 'yoga-dhāraṇā,' a state of unified, unwavering focus where the meditator, the process of meditation, and the Divine object of meditation begin to merge into one singular, divine reality.
The mastery of the self begins with the withdrawal of consciousness from external stimuli to establish an unwavering, inward-focused stability in the Divine presence.
