Deep Meaning · English
In this profound verse, Krishna reveals the tragic paradox of human existence: we are eternally immersed in the Divine, yet we remain unaware of it. By declaring that He is not manifest to everyone, Krishna explains that His own divine potency—Yoga-maya—acts as a shimmering veil. This is not a malicious concealment, but an ontological necessity. If the absolute, unconditioned reality of the Brahman were fully visible to the conditioned mind, the play of duality (Lila) would cease. Maya serves as the stage curtain that allows for the experience of subject and object, enabling the soul to embark on its journey of seeking. The term 'Yoga-maya' is pivotal; it is the Lord's creative power that harmonizes the infinite with the finite. The 'deluded' (mudhah) mentioned here are those whose vision is restricted by the gunas, seeing only the transient forms and the ego-centered self. Because they perceive the world through the lens of birth, death, and change, they cannot recognize the Ajama (unborn) and Avyayam (immutable) essence that is their own true nature. Krishna invites Arjuna—and by extension, the sincere seeker—to look past the external spectacle and recognize the static, eternal substratum that supports the entire flux of the universe.
The divine is not hidden by distance, but by the egoic projections of our own minds, which mistake the ephemeral play of phenomena for the immutable reality of the Self.
